VRF Lite

VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding) is a technology that creates separates virtual routers on a physical router. VRF isolating Interfaces, routing tables, and forwarding tables, than its preventing traffic from VRF to other VRF. By default all interfaces belong to global VRF. Global VRF is same with global routing table. This technology is very useful for Service Provider because VRF can visualize the router, creating multiple VRF and multiple routing tables. Because of those feature Service Provider can delivery to Enterprises without any concern related to IP Duplication, and traffic segregation between enterprises. VRF lite is VRF without MPLS component. the feature of VRF Lite is very useful when trying to segregate the routing table without MPLS implementation.

VRF is same with routing instance in juniper, the detail information about routing instance already discussed before. To reate the VRF using command vrf definition <vrf-name> and assigning VRF to specific interface using vrf forwarding <vrf-name> under Interface configuration. the most useful command to verify configuration is show ip vrf interfaces to show the list of assigned vrf to all interfaces, and show ip route vrf <vrf-name> to show the routing table of specific VRF. Same with global routing table, VRF also using ping to verify connectivity but with addition information of VRF name, ping vrf <vrf-name> <IP_Address>.
